Jiayuguan Pass was constructed in 1372 during the Hongwu reign of the Ming dynasty and became a major western stronghold of the Ming Great Wall. UNESCO documentation places it on the Hexi Corridor, an important route of the ancient Silk Road. The earlier copy’s detailed claims about specific political motives, tribal threats, and a literal point where “east met west” have been removed as overstatement.
